About Melinda

Melinda grew up in Sydney with a keen interest in nature, science, and art.

Science lessons at school were a favourite, probably because they usually involved some sort of scientific drawing.

Melinda graduated from the University of Sydney in 1982 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Hons 1.

After working for many years as a small animal vet and, with her husband, raising four children, she decided to pursue her interest in art.

In 2008 Melinda began classes at the RBG Sydney, with Barbara Duckworth. It was here that she discovered her love of coloured pencils.

In 2017 she completed the SBA Distance Learning Course Diploma, based in London, passing with Distinction.

Melinda has since exhibited both locally and internationally, including Royal Botanic Garden Sydney’s ‘Botanica’,  Melbourne’s ‘The Art of Botanical Illustration’,  the Society of Botanical Artists ‘Plantae’,  and the Hunt Institute’s ’16th International Exhibition of Botanical Art and Illustration’ in the USA.

Melinda’s botanical artworks have received national and international recognition, including a Silver Gilt Medal at the Royal Horticultural Society Botanical Art and Photography Show, London (2022). Her work has also received awards from the Botanical Art Society of Australia and the Society of Botanical Artists, London.

Through her botanical art, Melinda hopes to inspire people to connect more deeply with nature, appreciate the remarkable diversity of our flora, and recognise the importance of conserving biodiversity for future generations.

A little more about Melinda’s life away from botanical art …

Melinda spends a lot of time in her large Sydney garden, volunteering at Taronga Zoo, and enjoying the company of her ever-expanding family. And, just for fun, she has created Mopsy’s Menagerie – a collection of animal drawings originally made for her grandchildren, who call her Mopsy.
